Yayoi Kusama x Satoshi Ohno: The Iconic 24-Hour Television Charity T-Shirt Collaboration

When high art meets Japanese pop culture, magic happens. In 2013, world-renowned contemporary artist Yayoi Kusama joined forces with Satoshi Ohno, the leader of the iconic J-pop group Arashi and an accomplished artist in his own right, to design the official charity T-shirt for NTV’s 24-Hour Television 36 (24時間テレビ).

This unique cross-disciplinary collaboration became an instant phenomenon, blending Kusama's signature avant-garde motifs with Ohno's detailed, expressive artistic style.

The Creative Spark & Artistic Connection

The duo first crossed paths during NTV's program Sekai ni Kouru 30-nin no Nihonjin (30 Japanese People the World Is Proud Of) in 2012. Their shared passion for fine art created an immediate bond, leading to a artistic partnership for the 2013 charity drive.

Design Symbolism: Love, Life, and the Four Seasons

The front design features a bold, vibrant flower created by Kusama, complemented by delicate background artwork and line drawings hand-crafted by Ohno. On the back, Kusama contributed a heart composed of polka dots spelling out "LOVE FOREVER".

A unique aspect of this release was its four distinct colorways, each designed to represent one of Japan's four seasons (四季):

  • Pink (Spring / 春): Represents cherry blossoms and new beginnings.
  • Blue (Summer / 夏): Reflects clear skies and vibrant energy.
  • Yellow (Autumn / 秋): Symbolizes golden leaves and harvest warmth.
  • White (Winter / 冬): Captures purity and serene winter snow.

Preserving Your Pre-Owned Art Apparel

Whenever we add a vintage screen-printed piece to our personal rotation, we follow strict care steps to keep the cotton fibers and graphics in museum condition:

  1. Wash inside out on a cold, delicate cycle to prevent print friction.
  2. Line dry in the shade to protect the vibrant yellow fabric from sun fading.
  3. Never iron directly over graphics or screen prints.
