Yoshitomo Nara x Satoshi Ohno: The Story Behind the Iconic 24-Hour Television Charity T-Shirt
Every year since 1978, Nippon Television Network (NTV) hosts its signature annual charity broadcast, 24-Hour Television: "Love Saves the Earth" (24時間テレビ 「愛は地球を救う」). Broadcast live from Saturday evening through Sunday during late August, this iconic event—often abbreviated as 24HTV or 24時間テレビ—unites viewers across Japan to raise funds for medical assistance, disability support, and environmental conservation.
One of the most anticipated highlights of each broadcast is the official charity T-shirt. For 24-Hour Television 35 in 2012, an extraordinary artistic collaboration took center stage: contemporary artist Yoshitomo Nara partnered with Satoshi Ohno, the leader of the legendary idol group Arashi.

A Creative Synergy: Nara’s Iconic Character Meets Ohno’s Vision
This project marked Satoshi Ohno’s second time designing the official charity T-shirt, following his first contribution in 2004 for 24-Hour Television 27: "Your Dream is Everyone's Dream". However, working alongside world-renowned artist Yoshitomo Nara brought a unique creative energy to the 2012 release.
The shirt features Nara’s signature child figure, recognized globally for its expressive gaze. Within the character's eyes, Ohno meticulously hand-drew the Kanji character for "Future" (未來 / 未来), aligning seamlessly with the broadcast's core theme. Above the head, twin leaves sprout gracefully—symbolizing growth, renewal, and the connection between fresh ideas and the future.

The reverse side of the shirt proudly displays the bold calligraphic rendering of "未來" (Future), emphasizing hope and forward movement.

Detailed Breakdown of the Design Elements
Designer Satoshi Ohno provided an in-depth breakdown explaining how each element of this famous charity shirt was crafted through his collaborative process with Yoshitomo Nara:
1. The Central Girl Character (女の子)
The core motif on the front is Nara's iconic child figure. Ohno explained that while both artists discussed the concept together, he entrusted the actual drawing and signature touch of the face entirely to Yoshitomo Nara.
2. "Future" Inside the Eyes (目の「未来」)
In a unique artistic fusion, Nara suggested embedding Japanese calligraphy directly within the eyes of the character. Ohno penned several handwritten versions of the word "Future" (未來 / 未来) in his sketchbook, and Nara personally selected his favorite stroke design to incorporate into the character's pupils.
3. Sprouting Seedling & Apple Motif (双葉)
The double leaves sprouting atop the head represent a new shoot growing toward the future. When brainstorming together, both artists immediately clicked on this idea. Additionally, because Yoshitomo Nara hails from Aomori Prefecture—famous across Japan for its apples—Nara deliberately stylized this section to resemble an apple stem.
4. Bold Back Calligraphy: "Future" (後:未来)
Nara encouraged bringing traditional Japanese calligraphy into the overall aesthetic. Although they tested various cute and stylized fonts, they ultimately chose a clean, bold brush calligraphy written by Ohno to create a balanced and powerful visual statement on the back.
5. Hidden Detail: "24-Hour Television" Text (24時間テレビ)
Originally, the text "24時間テレビ" was intended to go inside the character's eyes alongside "Future". To keep the facial details clear, Ohno moved his brushwork to the side. He humorously noted in his commentary that he actually only wrote "24時間" (24 Hours) on the side, knowing "テレビ" (TV) would be too small to render clearly!
A Symbol of Hope and Unity
Released in vibrant pastel shades including light blue, bright yellow, and soft pink, the charity T-shirt quickly became a memorable piece of Japanese pop culture and art memorabilia. Members of Arashi and various guest hosts wore the designs throughout the live broadcast on August 25 and 26, 2012, symbolizing unity for a meaningful cause.

Whether you are a collector of Yoshitomo Nara's contemporary art pieces, a dedicated fan of Satoshi Ohno and Arashi, or an admirer of iconic Japanese streetwear history, this collaboration remains a touchstone of creative charity projects.
